Coiled basketry

Basketry is an ancient craft that is relevant in contemporary life as it allows us to slow down and experience the satisfaction of creating something hand made.

In this workshop you will learn how to use natural plant fibre to coil a functional basket. Coiling is a technique that involves wrapping or stitching an active element around a passive one. You will be guided to wrap split flax around the pine needle core using a mariposa stitch. Coiling is a time-consuming basketry technique so you will need to take your basket home to finish. The tutor will provide a demonstration and handout to assist with the finish of your basket.

Materials will be provided as well as information about how to collect and prepare your own plant fibre. Materials for finishing the basket will be available to taken home. No experience is needed. Suitable for both adults and teenagers.
