For some years Newstead Arts Hub Inc has been working on its first community arts project reflecting where we live and our association to the Loddon. In 2025, we were successful in gaining funding through a Regional Development Victoria’s Tiny Towns Fund. We are getting ready to kick off the fun this April.

The focus of the Weaving the River project is on creating a community expression of the importance of the Loddon River in our community’s social, ecological and economic lives. It involves three artists working collaboratively who will be assisted by community volunteers to create an art installation that wraps a ‘river of weaving’ around the existing framework of rusted steel ‘railway line’ fence posts, improving the amenity, safety and functionality of our door space and garden.

Weaving the River offers community members opportunities to participate through sharing stories and art-making. Our hope is through the process, participants will learn more about the Loddon, ourselves and celebrate a sense of our local identity.

River Story Telling Day

Your stories, whether spoken, drawn or written will be the basis of artist team’s final design. To help make this happen, on the last Sunday of April, we are hosting a community event – River Story Telling Day at the Hub.  This day is designed for all ages and all stories!  Commencing with an opening ceremony with Dja Dja Wurrung Elder Aunty Marilyne Nicholls, you can sit and yarn with others about your stories of the Loddon, join in family friendly activities facilitated by Waterwatch and our artists, go on a guided river walk or write a post card or add to our community river map. Did we mention, enjoy a BBQ lunch with us
