There is always a close observation of the land, a continual search for the essence of the landscape in Patey’s work. The visual power lies in the intense sense of stillness and ambiguity, the thoughtful use of media and paper, and the gradual realisation that each image captures a fleeting moment, soon to change. As Rockwell Kent observed, “In quietness the soul expands.” Expressing this concern remains a constant thread throughout her practice.
