Around these Parts
“I use mixed media in my art works: acrylic paint, charcoal and crayon, spray paint and collage. I like to work quickly with gesture and energy and often work on several pieces simultaneously. I enjoy adding collage to painting, often to beak up composition that are becoming ‘static’, or to create different perspectives for the viewer to ponder.
“The places around Central Victoria that have influence my works in this show inlcude Bells Swamp between Newstead and Newbridge, Larni Barramal Yaluk at Strangways and the volcanic country between Newstead and Ballarat.”

“Prue McAdam and I have lived at Strangways/Sandon for nearly thirty years.
“The catalyst for my works on paper in this show is the re-naming of the Jim Crow Creek as Larni Barramal Yaluk, together with my growing concerns about the effects of climate change here and, well, everywhere. In the natural world these changes affect water, heat, air/wind and soil, and of course, how we and other living things survive.
“The works on show focus on the Loddon River between the Punt Road crossing at Newstead and Hepburn’s Corner, Strangways and where Larni Barramul Yaluk passes through Strangways and turns to meet the Loddon River. I assembled various resources that extended my largely hearsay version of the history of this vicinity without having set goals for where the research might lead me. I made prints, including monoprints, photo transfers, etchings and drawings on mulberry and hosho paper, hand coloured them, then instinctively assembled them into collages. As well, I included paperboats (see paperboats.org) because they are symbols of hope in these times of climate uncertainty.”
