Clay, ochres and fire

Sticks & Stone is a pairing of work by artist John A Smith and ceramicist Angie Izard. Smith constructs his abstract works using found and remnant materials, marking canvas and paper to engender a sense of place. Izard uses stoneware clay to create simple, functional forms, layering slips, oxides and glaze to suggest depth and a quiet presence.

About the artists:

Angie Izard

Since graduating from a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) in 2014 I have been making ceramics in my home studio in central Victoria. My wheel-thrown stoneware provides a canvas for expressing the play of light, the movement of clouds, rusted iron: fleeting moments that reveal perfection in imperfection. Making is central to my daily life and a way of connecting with the world around me and beyond.

John Smith

My landscapes are local abstract improvisations. They are constructed with media direct from their location, along with other added found pigments and grounds I have collected and processed over the time of this practice. There is sand, slate, clay, ground and crushed rock, charcoal, ash, ochre and sap. I also use found material and objects, fragments of glass, pottery, metal, and anything I can render into the surface of the paintings.  I use these materials as a literal and physical reference to their place, to enhance the sensory properties the landscape or subject itself may project through the very surface of the paintings.
