Welcome to Winter

Newstead Arts Hub eNews June (2020)

Frosts creep across the landscape creating blue sky days and welcome rain softens the soil. While you stay  safe and warm, feast your eyes on the beautiful works being shared by local artists as part of our inaugural online Artist Market.

In this issue:

  • updates on our Artist Market featuring 12 local artists and more to come!
  • trees go into our garden
  • support for creative industry workers.

Enjoy our online Artist Market

Now showing on our Artist Market are beautiful ecoprints, funky jewellery and sculptures, practical and stunning ceramics, and distinctive prints and paintings, all for sale directly from the artists.

Each week, we are adding different artists and styles, selecting two or more of the artists who exhibited at the Hub in 2019-2020, including the cancelled Best of Show from Newstead Open Studios. With most galleries and shops still closed, we are pleased to keep offering our support to local artists and craftspeople.

Currently showing on our Artist Market: Kate Borradaile, Carol de Graauw, Cherryl Fyffe, Angie Izard, Prue McAdam, Marcela Olea, Julie Patey, and Diane Thompson. They join the first four artists featured on our Artist Market: Sarah Koschak, Libby Noblet, Richard Sullivan and Selina Wilson.

In our new garden

Before the cold descended, our garden-growers group did some serious planting at the Arts Hub. Five advanced Dwarf Yellow Gums were planted, with suitable social distancing. Many thanks to the tree sponsors: Genevieve Barlow, Geoff and Mary Park, Julie Patey, and the Enviroshop (Frank Forster). The trees look fantastic – the garden is starting to take shape!

Come spring we hope to have many more plants ready to go into the new garden beds. Email Janet Barker (ecologica@bigpond.com) if you would like to help grow plants or work on the Arts Hub garden. Or make a donation to support the garden: Newstead Arts Hub (BSB 633 000, Account No. 155603707) – please put Garden+Your Surname as the reference.

Creation of this stage of the garden has been supported by a grant from Maldon & District Community Bank, by our recent fundraising events, and Mount Alexander Shire.

Support for creatives

And from Mount Alexander Shire is news about the Victorian State Government’s $16.8 million package announced on Sunday to support our Creative State, in particular, through Creative Victoria’s Sustaining Creative Workers Initiative. If you are applying for this grant fund or the Australia Council’s Resilience Fund, please seek advice from MASC’s Vicki Anderson, Cultural Development Officer via v.anderson@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.
