Throwing our doors open
In August we’ll be opening our doors with a stunning Lee Sheldon retrospective, featuring her beautiful, framed drawings. An absolute treat, Lee’s exhibition will open on Saturday 1 August. And of course, we will have a COVID-safe plan in place to look after all our visitors.
Until then, enjoy our amazing Artist Market, an online initiative to support artists during COVID 19 lockdown. Eighteen local artists (and more to come) are now showing photographs, prints, paintings, jewellery, ceramics, sculptures and drawings. Have a scroll through the Artist Market page on our website.
In this issue:
– more glorious works now up on our Artist Market
– music-making at the Hub
– garden needs donations.
More artists on the online Artist Market
Since our last eNews, lots more local artists have joined our online Artist Market. All previously exhibited at the Hub in 2019-2020, including the cancelled Best of Show from Newstead Open Studios. Even as shops and galleries start to reopen, money is tight for many of our local creatives.
This week we have added Geoff Park’s brilliant bird photographs and Milton Moss’s paintings of evocative landscapes and traditional dress.
Other artists currently showing on our Artist Market: Chrisanne Blennerhassett, Kate Borradaile, Tony Day, Cherryl Fyffe, Craig Gaston, Carol de Graauw, Angie Izard, Sarah Koschak, Prue McAdam, Libby Noblet, Marcela Olea, Julie Patey, Rhyll Plant, Belinda Prest, John Smith, Richard Sullivan, Diane Thompson, Selina Wilson. Growing our garden
Our newly planted trees are thriving, starting to frame the garden. Local gardeners are busy growing nearly 500 plants, and we have ordered more plants from Newstead Natives and other nurseries looking towards a spring planting. We really need to raise money for these plants, and we’d love it if you could donate to help us meet the expected $750 bill.
All donations – big and small – would be really welcome: Newstead Arts Hub (BSB 633 000, Account No. 155603707) – please put Garden+Your Surname as the reference.
Big thanks to those who have sponsored the trees and already donated to the garden: your donations will go into much needed soil, compost and mulch. Creation of this stage of the garden has been supported by a grant from Maldon & District Community Bank, by our recent fundraising events, and Mount Alexander Shire.
Behind closed doors
Going ‘virtual’ at the Arts Hub, Ruby Shirres recorded one of a series of free music concerts and Chris Johnston chaired a five-day online Summit with experts and local government working together to explore a potential bid for World Heritage Listing for the Central Victorian Goldfields.
Ruby explained that Bach x Bratsche is a series of three virtual concerts celebrating Bach and Bratsche, interspersed with musical reflections by Jared Yapp. Presented by Australian National Academy of Music violas, the aim is to connect musicians and lovers of music from all walks of life and reinvigorate the classical music scene, returning to the timeless work of Bach to offer respite from the worries of the current climate. In turn, these concerts provide motivation to continue playing and creating, even if our work cannot be shared in person.
The online concerts with be available for free and available via ANAM’s webpage: https://anam.com.au/bach-x-bratsche. Ruby’s Arts Hub recording will be in the second concert to air, available from July 3rd to 9th.
Instrumentalists across the three concerts: Ruby Shirres (VIC), Cora Fabbri (NSW), Jared Yapp (WA), Henry Justo (QLD), Dasha Auer (VIC), Molly Collier O’Boyle (QLD), Kate Worley (SA) and Caroline Henbest (ANAM faculty).
