Newstead Arts Hub – Holding our breath

New Victorian COVID-19 restrictions mean that our doors need to stay closed for now. Like everyone, we will be sticking close to home.

Fingers crossed … for our reopening sometime around mid-late September. We are really looking forward to welcoming you back to the Arts Hub with a wonderful program of exhibitions and workshops.

And despite lockdown, we are still here virtually:

  • Our online Artists Market continues, with beautiful art to buy and share
  • Our eNews and posts on Facebook and Instagram will continue – so share your events and images with us
  • Our What’s On page will show our exhibitions and workshops as we lock in dates: October dates have been confirmed for Gypsy Weaver Cathy Tobin’s weaving workshops and plein air watercolour with Mark Dober on 27 September.

When we reopen, we’ll have a COVID-19 plan in place to keep everyone safe – and we’ll reschedule everything again if needed.

Are you our future Coordinator?

We are on the hunt for a coordinator. Might that be you?

Are you well organised, good at coordinating events and activities, and love communicating on social media updating websites and managing mailing lists?

And could you help us expand our reach by identifying development and funding opportunities, and helping build new program elements?

You need to be an independent contractor to apply. That means you are freelancing / running your own business and able to take on the Newstead Arts Hub within your portfolio at around 15 hours a month?

And you need to love working collaboratively with volunteers, organising and coordinating a variety of activities.

If you are good at most or all of these things, we would love to hear from you.

Please read the full description of the role and send us your Expression of Interest on or before Wednesday 26 August to Or to have a chat about the role, please contact NAH Committee members Chris Johnston (0418 512 471) or Geoff Park (0418 138 632) or email us with any questions to

Engaging your creativity

Join with Castlemaine artist Mark Dober and share his passion for plein air painting at a watercolour workshop within the Hub precinct on Sunday 27 September (12 places).

Gypsy weaver Cathy Tobin will be running two workshops: freeform loom weaving on Friday 2 October (4 places) and using weaving sticks to recycle old clothing into a rag rug on Saturday 17 October (6 places). Up-cycling at its most colourful!

Bookings will open on 1 September via the Newstead Arts Hub What’s On page.

Artist Market

Our online Artist Market continues throughout August, keeping you connected with some of our favourite local artists. There are many beautiful things available directly from the 22 exhibiting artists: all the art on offer and artists contact details are on our website.

This new creation by Diane Thompson celebrates Parzival a knight in the time of King Arthur. His journeys pursued the Holy Grail, searching for spiritual meaning in a world of matter. His quest can be translated into a contemporary story of spiritual discovery.

Growing green

We are hoping to start planting in the garden on Saturday 12 September, but it will depend on COVID restrictions. Pencil it into your diary, let us know you are interested by dropping Janet a note at and we’ll be in touch to confirm or reschedule a few days beforehand.

If you are able, we’d welcome a donation to help develop the garden: Newstead Arts Hub, BSB 633 000, Account No. 155603707, and put Garden + Your Surname as the reference.

Taking care

It’s a tough time right now: venues, galleries and shops are closed, kids are being home-schooled, and probably we’re all a bit anxious. We hope all of our readers stay safe and well.

When we reopen, we’ll be implementing COVID-safe arrangements: more on these closer to our reopening time.
